Book Club: the film
Tuesday Susan in Hamilton emailed about the recent posting on Jane Fonda and her new film "Book Club" also staring Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. Susan wrote:
Hope everything is well with you. I loved your piece on Jane Fonda – have always admired her. A friend and I went to see “Book Club”. Theater was filled with women “of a certain age” and we all laughed and laughed. Candice Bergen is particularly funny, but I’ve always thought she had great delivery. Take an afternoon off and go see it.
A few hours later, I was outdoors when my neighbor returned from seeing “Book Club.” She stopped her car, lowered the window, and called to me: “Book Club! It’s darling! Go see it!”
Apparently “Book Club” is the fun movie of the summer for certain age women. But is this a surprise? The four leads are played by two winners of the Academy Awards Best Actresses (Keaton and Fonda), five time Emmy Award winner for sit-com Murphy Brown (Bergen) and Academy Award and Golden Globe Best Supporting Actress (Steenburgen).
For French connections, Jane Fonda was married to French film director Roger Vadim. Candice Bergen was married to French film director Louis Malle from 1980 until his death in 1995. Both Jane Fonda and Candice Bergen have French daughters. Vanessa Vadim (Fonda) and Chloé Françoise Malle (Bergen). Candice Bergen speaks fluent French.
