More Paris Chic June 2023

In the previous Nouvelles, I shared with you three of the four photos of chic women our Chic & Slim Special Correspondent Kat snapped on her recent visit to Paris. Today, the fourth, Kat’s favorite: the girl in the red dress boarding the train.

With the photo, Kat included this comment:

I’ve left the best for last - and it was literally the last, as I spotted the young woman in the dark red dress arriving at St. Lazare just as I was leaving, and ran off to snap her just before she passed through the barrier.

Anne Comments: My first reaction to this photo was a flood of memories of fashions in the 1950s when full-skirted, cap-sleeved dresses in exactly this design were popular. Though I could not precisely remember a dress in this style that had epaulettes on the shoulders. But I do remember that under these full-skirted dresses we wore petticoats we called in my section of the USA can-cans. (In other parts of the USA, they were called crinolines.) And I can remember the amount of time it took to starch and iron these petticoats. This young woman, has allowed her petticoat to show below the hem of the skirt, as Kat pointed out.

My second thought about the outfit was that the young woman was a flight attendant taking the train to the airport to report for duty. (Probably the epaulettes suggested this.) But given the variety of outfits Kat observed women wearing in Paris, perhaps this was just the outfit she chose for travel.

I can also remember an era when hatboxes were carried as handbags. Surprisingly, an internet search turned up a multitude of present day handbag designers who were currently selling hatbox style handbags. And I also discovered that the maker of the hatbox and suitcase in the photo is Steamline. Below you see the luggage set in brown trim. If you wish to see the exact luggage carried by the woman in the photo (and its prices) in the company’s black trim, you can follow the link below the photo..
